EARLY MUSIC REVIEW, FEBRUARY 2007
M Haydn: Andromeda and Perseus; Vokal Ensemble Köln, Saarbrücken RSO; Oehms OC 911
There is warm, expressive playing from the Saarbrücken Radio Orchestra; Reinhard Goebel controls the performance magisterially. He is alert to the often taxing demands of the writing for the two main characters who dispatch their coloratura and legato passages with considerable skill.
BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE, MARCH 2007
M Haydn: Andromeda and Perseus; Vokal Ensemble Köln, Saarbrücken RSO; Oehms OC 911
Joseph Haydn’s brother may have lacked his sibling’s genius, but this decorous and decorative work rises in places to music of genuine imagination and charm, and shows definite dramatic ability . . . . vivid and characterful playing from the Saarbrücken Radio Orchestra under Reinhard Goebel and nicely managed choral singing.
GRAMOPHONE, MAY 2007
M Haydn: Andromeda and Perseus; Vokal Ensemble Köln, Saarbrücken RSO; Oehms OC 911
Haydn’s vivacious symphonic arias and powerful accompanied recitatives often bring to mind Mozart’s Il re pastore, written for Salzburg a dozen years earlier . . . . the technical standards of singing and playing are high and the opera is another intriguing piece in our composite picture of the “other” Haydn.
